CineMarfa Film Festival
- Description:
- The First Annual CineMarfa film festival -- a new community endeavor to celebrate the art of film in Marfa -- will take place this May 5th through May 8th. CineMarfa separates itself from other film festivals with its unique programming, which emphasizes the nexus of film and visual art. Films made by visual artists, as well as rarely screened archival, experimental, documentary, and narrative films, will be seen alongside new (and historic) films from around the world. All screenings and events are FREE.
This year the focus is on No Wave Cinema, the late 70's underground art/film movement marked by a guerilla-style approach to filmmaking that embraced non-professional actors in staunchly non-commercial, unconventional narratives set amidst the backdrop of New York City's lower east side. Seminal No Wave filmmaker James Nares will be in attendance, screening several of his short films as well as the feature-length cult classic ROME '78, a Super-8 costume drama in which New York City stands in for ancient Rome. Other highlights include the Texas premiere of Celine Danhier's new documentary about No Wave cinema BLANK CITY, and films by Jack Smith and Andy Warhol.
As a counterpoint to the New York scene, CineMarfa will screen storied Austin filmmaker Eagle Pennell's 1979 feature THE WHOLE SHOOTIN' MATCH, a nuanced film that evokes the blank stare of the No Wave, with a regional twist.
Rounding out the program will be two feature films by German filmmaker Ulrike Ottinger, MADAME X (1978) and TICKET OF NO RETURN (1979). The New York Times has said of Ottinger's work that in the "...heyday of the New German Cinema, (Ottinger) constituted a one-woman avant-garde opposition to the sulky make melodramas of Wenders, Fassbinder, and Herzog, her films being long, discursive, and wildly inventive."
Also scheduled: a special screening of Larry Clark's recently unearthed silent 16mm film reel TULSA, with Clark appearing in person to introduce the film.
CineMarfa will also offer a family-friendly screening featuring the films of Marfa Elementary School students made in the MSA/SITES art program, and the cartoons of Sally Cruikshank, whose late 70's short films were influenced by Max Fleischer and are marked by surreal animation and vivid, psychedelic colors. Films will be screened in Marfa's Crowley Theater, with additional screenings to be announced in the upcoming weeks.
CineMarfa is a Marfa-based effort, drawing from the diverse pool of artists, filmmakers, and film lovers who call the tiny West Texas town home. The non-profit film organization is devoted to supporting local and visiting filmmakers, sponsoring year-round film screenings in Marfa, providing educational opportunities for local youth and adults to make and present films, and producing the CineMarfa film festival each May.
