Galleri Urbane Marfa announces Charming Dreams a new exhibition of work by Peter Voshefski dealing with ongoing themes of nature, layering and patterns. Voshefski will be in Marfa for the opening reception April 2 from 6-8:30pm. This body of work includes site-specific installation, drawings and mixed media paintings.
Archaeology is a theme across most of the work and a concept as well, my process itself is archaeological- works are often long term commitments that have many layers that are hidden and revealed over time. Peter Voshefski
Voshefski takes what he sees and experiences in nature all around him and recreates it in his work. His focus on the tiny and the expansive become a dialogue between him and his surroundings. A wide ranging color palette with repeating bold colors often define his work and are created from color combinations that are direct from nature.
About the Artist:
Peter Voshefski was born in 1967 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He received a BFA from the University of Cincinnati in 1991 and an MFA from University of New Mexico in 2002. Voshefski began drawing and painting as a child. Much of the 90s he worked as an artists assistant for the video artist Nam June Paik constructing sculptures, large scale public commissions, and installing shows in venues around the world. Moving to New Mexico in 1999 brought constant opportunities to adventure in outback, backpacking and painting at the same time. He participated in the inaugural of a program at UNM called Land Arts of the American West in which 15 artists spent a fall moving about the southwest region seeing land art sites, archaeological sites, and amazing geology all the while creating unique, nom-impactive land art projects and other art works. Currently lives and paints in Albuquerque's beautiful North Valley...leaving the city at every chance to be in nature.

Description:
The 2010 Texas Glider Rally will celebrate the50th anniversary of glider flying in the Marfa area and honor the memory of Billy Shurley, local rancher, towplane pilot and long-time supporter of soaring activities at Marfa.
The long white wings of sleek gliders will flash against the blue spring sky as twenty of the soaring craft from across the USA gather at Marfa Airport. The annual Rally will be April 17 to 24 as the pilots explore the thermal updrafts and mountain wave lift that make Marfa, Texas, famous around the aviation world.
Strong rising air currents known as "thermals" begin in the spring when the warm air (and the turkey vultures) return to west Texas. "Wave" lift also occurs as the air flows up and over the mountains surrounding the Marfa Plateau. Good thermal conditions exist above Marfa year-round, but the strongest updrafts occur from April to October.
Several World, US and Texas State soaring records have been set at Marfa over the years. The pilots will attempt "personal best" and soaring badge flights, which qualify them for entry into the National Contests.
In 1969 Marfa hosted the largest National Soaring Contest ever held in the USA with 86 sailplanes racing around the Big Bend. The movie "The Sun Ship Game" was filmed by cinema verite director Robert Drew during that contest, and will be featured at the Marfa Film Festival this May.
Burt Compton, Master Instructor at Marfa Gliders will offer some rides and flight instruction during the rally. The public is welcome to visit the Marfa Airport on highway 17 to watch the soaring activities. MARFA SHADOWS Signing at Marfa Book Co. April 17 1-3 p.m.
The First-Ever Chef Brett Mystery Arrives
This book has drugs, sex and more than a few violent murders, John DeMers observes of his first mystery novel, Marfa Shadows. There are also some excellent dinner specials.
The Houston writer and radio host takes a whole new direction in his 40-book career with the novels big-splash national release (Bright Sky Press, $23.95), which marks the start of a series starring his culinary crime-fighter, Chef Brett Baldwin.
On Saturday April 17, from 1 to 3 p.m., DeMers takes a break from leading a media tour of Marfa and its surroundings to sign copies at Marfa Book Co. The tour includes visits to places that play a role in the series, including the Chinati Foundation, Padres, the Hotel Paisano, the Presidio County Courthouse and the Food Shark, plus excursions to Alpine, Ft. Davis, Presidio, Terlingua and the River Road.
The new book, and presumably its years and years of siblings, are set in the small-but-artsy Far West Texas town of Marfa Bretts hometown and the place his fictional restaurant called Mesquite is located. But as John stresses, the action can take his hero just about anywhere, starting in Shadows with the nearby drug violence-riddled Tex-Mex border.
Early readers of Marfa Shadows have praised its detailed, realistic depictions of the behind-the-scenes workings of a commercial kitchen, built around Chef Bretts tireless 4-foot-10 sous chef Gilberto Cruz, and its passionate recreations of the moonscape scenery surrounding the town of Marfa all the way south to the border at Big Bend National Park. New York Times bestselling author Peter May said: John DeMers unlikely hero, Chef Brett Baldwin, takes us on a spicy, culinary crime cruise through the mean streets of small-town West Texas, and beyond. Hot stuff!
The second book in the Chef Brett series, Marfa Rocks, is already written and features a sexy but mysterious archaeologist named Dr. Hildegard Dane, with the third, Marfa Blues, in its early stages. Blues concerns a conspiracy reaching back half a century behind the brutal murder of Texas music icon (and crusty, ponytailed Terlingua resident) T.J. Rattlesnake Garcia.
The books can be ordered directly via www.brightskypress.com, as well as from www.amazon.com.
All this writing takes place when John isnt on the air for NewsRadio 740 KTRH, hosting his Delicious Mischief food and wine radio show on Saturdays or his Houston ArtsWeek on Sundays. Both shows, plus Johns new weekly Delicious Mischief in Austin, are sponsored by Specs Wines, Spirits and Finer Foods. The big difference, he says: a lot more people get themselves killed in his novels!

Year of the Horse, Jim Jarmusch, 1997, 106'
"For Year of the Horse, Jarmusch's documentary about a Neil Young concert tour, Young himself suggested the project. Young said: "Look, I'll pay for it. Just shoot some stuff and see if you like it, and we'll continue if you do, and if you don't, I'll just put it on a shelf somewhere....You can really feel the personal view of a filmmaker, and above all the movie is about the band. It's more than a simple story; it's an impression, a succession of feelings. I had the idea of doing this movie - I like this kind of stuff and I like to have a camera with me, but Jim made it possible." - Neil Young

Opening & Artist Reception Friday for
Invisible Thread
Works by Danielle Rubi
April 23rd - July 16th, 2010
Opening: Friday, April 23rd, 6-9pm at Thunderbird Loungs, 601 W San Antonio/West Hwy 90
In Invisible Thread, Rubi confronts the variety of her cast of subjects head on through the imposition of technical and compositional parameters. The criteria are simple: all images in the group were shot on her favorite camera, a 1949, square format Rolleiflex and are all printed the same size; also, every image contains a strong horizontal line across the frame. Displayed, the images are justified according to their individual horizon line, rather than the top, bottom, or center of the frame. The effect of these parameters simplifies and connects a seemingly disparate group of images, in effort to show their common provenance: Rubi's eye. Another notion that emerged from this specific undertaking is the significance of horizons in the way we process, regard, and experience the world: It is how we arrange our written language; it is how we show chronologies; it is what happens when two arms reach for each other. A horizontal line is the simplest respresentation of a stable platform, our one true defense against the downward pull of gravity: the only thing that can truly hold us up. The frames of the photographs are custom made by designer/craftsman, Adrian Dentzel, from wood salvaged from the house in California in which Rubi grew up. Both the wood and the images are fragments of Rubi's personal world. Together, they are a physical and visual connection to her.

Contact Marfa Gliders to coordinate rides and lessons in the two-seat gliders at (800) 667-9464 or visit the website: FLYGLIDERS.com
