MARFA Wildlife management will be the topic of a free seminar to be conducted by the Texas AgriLife Extension Service from 8 a.m. until 4:15 p.m. Sept. 1 in Marfas Paisano Hotel Ballroom.
Wildlife plays a big part in the economics and culture of far West Texas, said Jesse Schneider, AgriLife Extension agent in Presidio County. Its something we put great value in and strive to preserve. This seminar is meant to help our areas landowners do that by providing them with the latest information available on pronghorn antelope and mule deer, two of our most important game animals.
The morning topics will include talks on pronghorn populations and restoration efforts, wildlife water development, the Pecos River Watershed Protection Plan, and intensive management strategies for desert quail.
The afternoon talks will be on feral hogs, wildlife economics, mule deer nutrition and the status of the mule deer population.
The seminar is being conducted by AgriLife Extension agents in Brewster, Jeff Davis and Presidio counties.
There will be three Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units available in the general category.
The seminar will include speakers from AgriLife Extension, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, private industry and AgriLife Extension Wildlife Services.
For more information contact Schneider at 432-729-4746.

Land Planning is one of five fundamental practices in Holistic Management. Class dates are September 27-29, with a free field on September 28th. Cost for this education is $200. Register online at www.holisticmanagement.org or call the Texas programs office at 512-847-3822.
On September 28th, we will gather at headquarters at 9am for a brief orientation to this 11,000-acre ranch and to Holistic Management. Land Planners for this ranch, Walt Davis and Robby Tuggle, will show you the hows and whys of their plan. Dr. Bonnie Warnock, department chair of Natural Resource Management at Sul Ross State University in Alpine shows us the grazing lands research projects her department is conducting on the ranch.
